Imran Khan announces protest rally to demand PM s resignation

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chiarman Imran Khan has announced to hold a protest rally next Friday in Islamabad to demand resignation of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif over the Panama Papers verdict. The Supreme Court on Thursday ruled there was insufficient evidence to order Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif s removal from office over corruption allegations levelled by the opposition, but it ordered further investigations. Two of five judges on the court bench recommended Sharif should step down, saying he was dishonest to the nation as well as to the parliament, but they were out voted.Speaking to journalists outside the National Assembly, Imran Khan said: If in any democracy in the world such comments were passed about a sitting chief executive, his own party would have asked him to resign .The PTI chief said if such damning comments from the judges had been passed in a democracy against the chief executive, he would have resigned himself. How is our demand wrong when we are asking the prime minister to step down while investigations are being done because the institutions are under him, he asked. He compared the prevailing situation with the UK where David Cameron quit after he lost the Brexit referendum despite being elected with a huge majority because he lost the moral ground to lead.It may be mentioned here that the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) has two months to complete its inquiry, after which a special bench of the apex court will decide what action to take.Documents leaked from the Panama-based Mossack Fonseca law firm appeared to show that Sharif s daughter and two sons owned offshore holding companies registered in the British Virgin Islands and used them to buy properties in London. The opposition accuses Sharif of failing to explain the source of offshore money and of lying to parliament while the prime minister and his children deny any wrongdoing.
